Meet the Team

Introducing James Godber, Senior Event Manager

How long have your worked for Suzanne James Catering?

I’ve been with the company for 13 years. I started as a kitchen porter, graduated to front of house and have been managing events for 9 years now.

As an Event Manager what exactly do you do ?

Everything except the food (and I have been known to jump into the kitchen if needed). It involves making sure that every client gets the event that they want, ensuring that it runs on time & that the staff are always where they are supposed, doing what they are supposed to be doing. I work closely with the clients, whether that means holding an umbrella for a bride, or as on a recent event, pinning the bustle onto her dress!

What do you love about your job?

It’s incredibly rewarding: we frequently hear great feedback from our clients who tell us that their event was perfect and the guests were very impressed. When the event is a wedding you are responsible for one of the most important days of a couple's life and you end up working closely with them.  They often have unexpected requests on the day. To get that right is incredibly rewarding. I graduated from a theatre school and there is a huge amount of theatre in creating an event so those skills come in very handy.

What has been your most challenging event to work on?

All of them are really unique - each event brings it’s own challenges and I approach each one as though it is the first one we’ve ever done to ensure that there is no lapse in quality. However, we’ve done some dinners for members of the royal family and they always keep everyone on their game. Not least because of the extra levels of security and social protocol.

Tell us about a time when you saved the day at an event…we're sure there must be some good tales to tell!

A few years ago, we had a bride who ordered a wedding cake over the internet and didn’t see it until the day. When we opened the box the cake looked like an eight year olds birthday cake and the bride was incredibly upset. We had to run out and secure a wedding cake at very short notice - which we did I might add!

Which of the many venues you've worked at is your favourite?

Probably the Horniman Museum because we manage every aspect of the event which tends to be day-long, and we have three event sites at that venue, which sometimes run at the same time.

What's your favourite food to eat?

I’m a sucker for a great fried breakfast!

If you could dine with anyone, past or present who would it be?

T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) who has always been a hero.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?

I go to see an inordinate amount of theatre and lots of bands. Travel is a big interest: I’ve just been on a road trip across the USA from east to west, that was fun!

In your opinion what makes Suzanne James Catering different from other catering companies?

It has to be the standard of quality that is central to our ethos.  I can honestly say it runs through every aspect of what we do. Whether, it’s food, drinks, service, coat check - every detail is thought about.
