New Season, New Flavours & News for you!

At last! Spring is definitely in the air, and on our menus.....from West Country Watercress to Brixham Scallops, gorgeous Forced Rhubarb and wonderful Portwood English Asparagus, we have, as always, picked the best that British farmers have to offer.

Our 2017 menus are all finalised and we have some wonderful new creations we can't wait to share with you.

I don't think there can be many dishes that look as fresh and springlike on the plate as this beautiful Broad Bean, Pea, Mint and Feta Salad with Pea Shoots and a Lemon Vinaigrette - the colours are simply beautiful and the edible flowers are always a talking point!

Easter wouldn't be the same without roast lamb; it seems to be on almost every menu at the moment! Ours comes from Devon and is high welfare, raised using traditional farming methods and left to graze naturally, producing meat that is succulent, tender and tasty.

 

Wild Garlic has been around for a couple of weeks now. I love using it sautéed with some Linguini and a little left over crab salad. You may have spotted it growing locally, but if you should find yourself tempted to forage then please make sure you have permission from the landowner before you do so.

We are so lucky to have an amazing group of suppliers that we speak to on a weekly basis. They ensure we always purchase the very best produce and keep us informed on any price changes or impending supply issues. Nearly all of our listed suppliers are very deservedly part of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, with the maximum listing of 3 stars, just like us!

Did you celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday, 25th March? This year was the biggest yet with an unprecedented 187 countries and territories taking part. Over 3,000 landmarks switched off their lights and millions of individuals, businesses and organisations across seven continents stepped forward to "change climate change". And we have even more reasons to be cheerful: UK carbon emissions have fallen to their lowest level since the 1920s, thereby smashing the climate change target for 2020. It's mostly down to us cutting the coal cord. This genuinely significant achievement should serve as motivation for us all to review our energy consumption, especially given the recent 9% price hike by one of the big power companies.

Aside from my passion for environmental issues another one of the privileges of running my own business is being able to support local charities. In March we were honoured to be recognised by Link Age Southwark as a Business Patron, having worked with them many times over recent years. We also ran a very successful East Dulwich Supper Club Evening on the 9th March to help raise funds for St Christopher's Hospice; a charity very close to my heart - more on this later in the newsletter.

This week the builders have packed up and moved out of the Horniman Conservatory. We were on site over the weekend for an event in the Pavilion and managed to get a sneak peek and a couple of photos to share with you.

Words really cannot describe how beautiful the new floor looks, or how excited we are about the improvements. There are so few Victorian Conservatories left in such an excellent state of repair, and available to book for events, this unique venue is now more stunning than ever, and very much prepared for the busy months ahead. More details about the full extent of the works can be found later in this newsletter.

I think this may have been our busiest March ever and April looks set to be equally so as we see the numbers of weddings increase dramatically from now right through to October. We have got the most fantastic team of chefs and event planners working hard to ensure every event exceeds expectations, and nothing makes us happier than feedback like this, from last weekend;

"Just wanted to say that we; and that's everyone present at the wedding, had a fantastic time and your team were absolutely awesome. I'm knocked out. Really top class across the board. Thank you so much."

Dine with Design

At a private event in their London showroom in Clerkenwell, Arper launched a new initiative in collaboration with the Design Museum: Dine with Design.

Dine with Design is a programme of invite-only conversations on the most pressing topics in design and culture held at the world's most historic place of discussion - the dinner table.

Suzanne James were proud sponsors and caterers on the evening delighting guests with canapés & a three course meal!

Horniman Conservatory;
Breathtakingly Beautiful Refurbishment Complete!


For the past three months an amazing team of builders have been hard at work at the Horniman Conservatory. This week the venue has been signed off and it is now ready and waiting (just like us!) for the busy event season ahead!

We are so excited to be able to reveal the stunning new floor, which has made this amazing event space even more beautiful (we really didn't think that was possible).

Future events will also benefit from a new lighting system which includes coloured LEDs, whilst the addition of underfloor heating means that one of London's most unique, Grade II Listed Venues will now be available for bookings throughout the year!

The Conservatory is suitable for weddings and seated dinners for up to 120 guests, or informal parties for up to 150 throughout the year. All bookings of 6 hours or more benefit from free use of the Horniman Bandstand for drinks and/or photos.

Charity wedding plans give us all reason to hope

Of all the wedding catering requests we receive, Duncan and Jackie's is anything but ordinary. This has little to do with their choice of canapés or drinks selection and a lot to do with the fact they'll be getting married in trainers, at 7.30am, on the Cutty Sark and then running the London Marathon for charity (not to mention trekking the Great Wall of China for their honeymoon).

St Christopher's Hospice
East Dulwich Supper Club

Last month we hosted a special East Dulwich Supper Club evening in support of St Christopher's Hospice. The evening was fully booked and Suzanne took the opportunity to tell those attending of her own family's gratitude to St Christopher's.

The evening included a raffle which raised £400, with prizes ranging from a large tray of Ferrero Rocher to ten Pilates classes, and a rather fabulous Gin Hamper donated by Suzanne James herself (Gin being one of her specialist subjects without a doubt!).

Overall the evening was a great success raising just over £2,000.00 which will go directly to this wonderful, local charity.
