You can't escape it - no matter which of the Festive TV ad's is your favourite it's the season to be jolly!!!! Here at SJHQ we all love a mince pie, so we couldn't be happier!

But before we get too festive let me tell you about November - it was one of those months that started well and just got better & better!

At the start of the month we took our East Dulwich Supper Club on tour to the newly refurbished Queens House, Greenwich. What an amazing night it was, read more and see images from the evening later in in the newsletter.

Then it was time for us to meet with Westminster College to discuss our two wonderful apprentices - Callum and Ollie. We are thrilled with their progress and are proud to be mentors to these two talented young men. You can read more about Ollie in this months "Meet the Team" below.

Last week on the 22nd November, we attended London's Food Matters Live event at Excel London. We were shortlisted for a Free From Eating Out Award and despite stiff competition we were awarded gold!! Head Chef Natalia and I proudly took to the stage to receive our award.

It has long been known that South London is home to many well known actors, and this month I was honoured to meet one of our "national treasures" to finalise plans for their December party. Of course this is all I can say on the matter, so forgive the teaser, but it is always exciting to be approached by a household name.

No two days are ever the same in this job, but if I were to tell you that I was escorted into an event kitchen by Storm Troopers to produce some stellar food including Galactic Brownies would you believe me? "Curiouser and curiouser!" as Alice once said! But look - that really is me!

The Canapé force strong in me!!

In addition to all this we also managed to host a fundraising East Dulwich Supper Club, in the form of a Thanksgiving inspired dinner for one of our favourite charities - Link Age Southwark. The evening raised a total of £2,200 - well done to everyone involved!

So, there you have it! All in all November really was another monumentally busy month. Interestingly it seems that Monday is the new Friday - with five (yes really five) events going out last Monday! It remains to be seen whether this is exclusively a Christmas trend or if it will continue into 2017.

Now we face the final big push before Christmas, as magical as always. Although some dates are fully booked we may still be able to assist if you have need of us, so please do get in touch. We can provide ready prepared canapés, dishes and desserts for you to collect from our professional kitchen and even help with additional glassware or china if you need it. Let us take away some of the stress in this chaotic season!

I am looking forward to Christmas so much. It is the only time of year
when we close the kitchen and office down completely so that the entire team can take a very well earned break. It will be lovely to spend time with my family and friends. Please take note of our closing dates below.

Christmas Closing Dates

We close at 5pm on Tuesday 20th December 2016

We will re-open on Wednesday 4th January 2017

2016 has been an amazing year. Thank you to all of you who have chosen us as caterers this year. Congratulations to all our newly married couples and enjoy your first Christmas!

EDSC on Tour
Queens House

On November 15th we held our much anticipated East Dulwich Supper Club on Tour at Queens House in Greenwich.

Guests arrived via the Romney Road Gates and followed the Lantern Lit Pathway to the Orangery where they enjoyed Pear & Thyme Fizz and exceptional Canapes.

The venue was beautifully lit by DJ for Me who also provided the music for the evening. Stunning flower arrangements were kindly provided by Karen Woolven, accredited Florist tol Royal Museums Greenwich.

At 7.45pm guests were invited to ascend the staircase to the previously unseen works of art now on display in the Gallery and to view the newly opened Kings and Queens Chambers and the Great Hall ceiling which has been hand painted by Turner Prize-winning artist Richard Wright.

After the tour Suzanne welcomed guests to the Great Hall where a sumptuous three course dinner was served. This was fully prepared by Executive Chef Suzanne James, Head Chef Natalia Pererrio and the team of apprentices.

After dinner guests were invited to step outside onto the Horseshoe Staircase to enjoy fireworks by Alchemy Fireworks. As always at a Suzanne James event every detail had been considered, with blankets on hand for those who felt chilly!

Finally everyone returned to the Orangery for Coffee, Tea, Tisanes, Handmade Chocolates and Complimentary Digestifs, before heading home.

What a wonderful evening it was!

Recognition for our work with the Southwark Apprenticeship Scheme

On Thursday, 3rd November Suzanne attended the the annual Southwark Apprenticeship Standard Celebration, and we were awarded accreditation as meeting the four key areas that are central to the success of any apprenticeship;

1. Secure employment with a minimum contract of 12 months.

2. Payment of the London Living Wage (or more in our case!)

3. Quality training provision

4. Mentoring and support.

We are very proud of the part we play in helping young people meet their aspirations. Who knows, the apprentices of today may be the Master-chefs of tomorrow!

Meet the Team
Oliver Lawless - Apprentice Chef

It may say Suzanne James above the door, and on the vans, and on the branding, but when you speak to the lady herself, much as she would love to take all the credit, she will also go to great pains to tell you about her business partner Graham Tooke, and the amazing team behind each and every event.

This month we are incredibly excited to introduce you to the second of our Apprentice Chefs, Oliver......a marvellous pastry chef in the making, we are so proud to be part of his journey to becoming a fully qualified chef.

Venue News
Horniman Conservatory

It may be the end of the wedding season, but we still have two more Horniman Weddings before Christmas!

The Conservatory will then close until mid April as the overall structure will be checked and refurbished and cleaned, traditional style radiators will be installed, and most excitingly a beautiful new floor will be laid. Watch this space for updates in the New Year.

 

Here's to a weekend snowfall and some happy sledging over the winter!

The Foundling Museum

The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, the UK's first children's charity and first public art gallery. Established in 1739 by the philanthropist Thomas Coram to care for babies at risk of abandonment, instrumental in helping Coram realise his vision were the artist William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel. Their creative generosity set the template for the ways in which the arts can support philanthropy. Hire is available from 5.00pm Tuesday to Sunday and from midday on a Monday.

Tree Appeal News
18,000 trees before Christmas!

Since September 2006 we have been working in partnership with the Tree Appeal to counteract the carbon emissions we generate and to help conserve our woodlands. Each time we use our vans to an event, a British broad leaved tree is planted in our client's name. We also give the option of planting a further 3 trees in order to make the event 'carbon neutral'.

Autumn is always the busiest time of the year for Tree Appeal and 2016 is no exception. They are well on the way to meeting their target of getting more than 18,000 saplings in the ground before winter sets in. Some 80 schools plus a selection of nature reserves and other biodiversity sites will be busy between now and Christmas making sure their trees get off to the best start. They will then be taking a little breather until it all starts again in February!

They have calculated the carbon footprint of 168 varieties of fresh produce. Did you know for example that 800ml of milk has the same footprint as driving ten miles?
