Tis the season for a party......

Three, Two, One....GO! .......................

Christmas cakes, mince pies, mulled wine, dehydrating oranges, cranberry sauce, giblet gravy! It's all go in our kitchen, and whilst you may think that the chef elves are doing it all while I wander around being glamorous let me tell you that it's a tough job being me! Who do you think has to taste everything before it leaves our kitchen? Well it's not Mrs Claus. Oh no. It's me and me little tasting spoon getting ready for the marathon month ahead!

As you party hard this month please take a moment to mentally thank those who are first in and last out day after day at this time of year. For us that is Natalia, our ever present Head Chef and her amazing team including not just chefs but porters too - there are more of us, and more events than ever before now and the proof is in the pile of washing up that is dutifully processed and packed away so that the team can start afresh the next day. Plus of course our front of house team - Event Managers and Waiting Staff, and finally bringing it all together behind the scenes our hard working office team.

Of course a party is not just for Christmas, and if you are thinking of deferring your celebrations then do knock on our door. Many of our venues are allowing us to offer great deals in the first quarter of 2018, not to mention discounted rates at fifty seven, our own private hire events space. Coming over to fifty seven guarantees excellent food, service and a homely space to host a cheeky little party so do check out our availability.

On to weddings, let's just say we are holding a date in May shall we?! There is nothing like a Royal Wedding to get the whole country into a romantic frame of mind, and with Christmas and New Year just around the corner, closely followed by Valentines Day we are fast approaching the most popular time of year to pop the question. Make the most of your winter proposal by booking your wedding before the end of January to secure the best possible rates! If you are yet to find the perfect venue then do take a look at our website for ideas. As part of our service we will liaise with the venue to secure discounted venue hire and to ensure the smooth running of your big day. We also assist with all planning, sharing our experience and knowledge with you to make the process as easy as possible.

Finally, for those who are still searching for the perfect present for someone special - Mum? Grandma? Wife? Girlfriend? Sister? Aunt? We have just the thing, read on to hear about our Afternoon Tea Fascinator Workshop in January, it is going to be a fun filled, prosecco fuelled afternoon with the most amazing canapés and afternoon tea too. You can be sure I will be there!

Hat's off - a great Christmas Present idea!
Afternoon Tea with Crown Jules & Lady James

Sunday, 14th January 2018
at fifty seven by Suzanne James

It's all about experiential presents this year, which is quite handy as we have just the thing ..... and we are not keeping it under our hats!

In January we are hosting a prosecco fuelled vintage afternoon tea with a fascinator workshop to boot! Our good friend "The Crown Jules" has kindly agreed to share her skills before, during and after prosecco, teaching attendees how to make a beautiful head piece fit for Royal Ascot, a Royal Wedding, or any other event that may take your fancy!

The show starts, of course, with prosecco cocktails and canapés on arrival followed by the main event; a hands on millenary masterpiece tutorial. You will then be invited to make your own fascinator or comb headpiece. A little more prosecco and I promise you will be flaunting your hats with merriment on the red carpet of North Cross Road while we set up for the most luxurious quintessentially English afternoon tea! Of course we wouldn't expect you to just drink tea so we will be topping up your prosecco throughout!

This really is an event not to be missed, places are selling fast so be sure to snap up your tickets while you still can.

Charity News.....

There was lots of fundraising to be done in November, for some brilliant causes.

On Saturday, 4th November we supported Stef from Adams Catering Hire by putting on a show stopping Supper Club Evening to raise funds for Rhino Revolution. This amazing charity is dedicated to protecting rhinos today and for future generations in the Greater Kruger area - the epicentre of the poaching crisis.

With a South African themed menu we made boerworst 'sushi', buffalo mozzarella, and peanut chicken canapés, alongside Swinging Safari cocktails!

Dinner was well underway on the savanna styled linen and tableware and one could almost see the Baobab Trees in the distance when the raffle took place and the auction hotted up in the battle for the very special knitted Unbuntu The Rhino (possibly the cutest raffle prize ever)!

Guests joined us from as far afield as Inverness and Yorkshire as well as Essex and locals too from Nunhead, Forest Hill and Dulwich. Thank you to everyone who ate, drank, got merry and had a throughly good evening, Together we managed to raise almost £2,500.00, 100% of which went to Rhino Revolution UK.

The first five orphaned rhinos have just been 'soft-released' - into a much larger area adjacent to the Rhino Revolution land. This area is a security patrolled private game reserve that has helicopters, armed guards, K9 patrols and horse guards all helping to keep the rhino safe. They will be finding their own food and water supplies and, once they seem to be well settled (possibly after a year or more) the hope is to release them into an even greater area which will include other wild rhinos - thus extending the gene pool and improving the chance of successful breeding. See the release here.

On Thursday, 23rd November we hosted the annual Linkage Southwark Supper Club. This is always a lovely evening and has become something of a pre-Christmas institution for us. The night raised almost £2,000 through ticket sales and the raffle.

We hope this event will help Linkage to reach their target of £20,000 - especially now they have launched their Christmas Challenge, when all donations made by 12pm, Tuesday 5th December will be DOUBLED! We will be donating £100, which will be doubled, in lieu of sending Christmas Cards in the post.

The money raised will be used to provide more volunteer transport so that older people across Southwark can attend activity groups throughout the year, including the annual Christmas Party. The volunteer drivers are on the front line, helping to tackle loneliness by helping older people to getup and about and to thrive in their local community in later life.

Make your donation now via this link & watch it DOUBLE.

Bears Kitchen Saturday Pop Ups at fifty seven

They say "keep it in the family", so when my 11 year old son Freddie asked me if we could run a Pop Up at fifty seven how could I possibly refuse?

Not only did he come up with the idea, but he even created the name "Bears Kitchen" (Bear is his nickname). It seems I am not the only creative one in the family!

Our launch was on Saturday, 18th November, when lots of you popped by to enjoy Lamb Burgers with Chips (vegetarian option available too of course). We had so much fun and I loved having both my boys there alongside me, in our private hire event space.

We will try to run a pop up every Saturday from now on, working around private hire bookings of course. As well as our own creations we would love to provide a showcase for other talented local chefs so please get in touch if you'd like to join us!

It's all about the glaze.....

For many of us Christmas wouldn't be the same without a joint of ham. Easy to prepare and easy to keep (provided you have fridge space) this can become as much of a Christmas tradition as Turkey or Mince Pies.

But with so many recipes out there, which one to go with? A quick survey of the SJ team has confirmed that a classic Honey & Mustard Glaze was top of the list, although Nigella's Coca Cola Ham also got a mention!

Here are links to two of our favourite recipes. If you are cooking a ham for Christmas share your photos with us on Social Media!

Suzanne James loves Nigella's recipe.....

Butterfly Girls - Kender Primary School in New Cross

Sometimes life can work in mysterious ways! In mid September Suzanne was invited to talk to The Nunhead WI about life as a local entrepreneur, businesswoman & mother. Part of her talk included the role of the Suzanne James Food Foundation and how we use funds raised to support projects in local primary schools.

The seeds of an idea were sewn, and over subsequent weeks the group discussed a number of possible projects before deciding on one to bring to us.

Edwina approached Suzanne on behalf of Kender School to explain how last year the girls from the Gardening Club had written to their headteacher, Mr Barr asking if they could plant a butterfly garden.

The school has a small copse at the back of the playground where forest school takes place, also home to the school chickens and a perfect location for some butterfly friendly plants which would look pretty, smell wonderful and attract butterflies and bees.

The girls are keen to pursue their project and have since we have confirmed our offer of £250 they have done plenty of research, and with the help of Anna, The Deputy Head and Kaz, who runs their gardening club they have created a planting scheme to include Buddleja, Red Valerian, Hebe, Wild Marjoram, Common Knapweed, Hemp-agrimony, Field Scabious, Honeysuckle & Marjoram.

In the Spring they will be able to start purchasing and planting some of the plants on their list along with a Butterfly garden school kit which includes 33 live caterpillars, a butterfly pavilion, a school instruction guide and an activity guide.

Once they have planted their garden, they will be able to release the butterflies and hopefully more will come.

We can't wait to see the results of their hard work and will be keeping you updated with progress in the coming months.

If you are a local primary school with a garden growing project we can help with get in touch.

Lovely Leftovers for the Festive Season

As we dive headfirst into the Christmas Season there is still time to think about all things eco.

Each year British households create about 7 million tonnes of food waste. With food prices increasing all the time (up by 3.5% in October alone) we should all be doing more to avoid waste and to make the most of our leftovers.

We have a list of lovely leftover ideas to share with you here, but if you invent any of your own this Christmas make sure you share them on social media to inspire others......and we would love to see your creations too!

Eat Seasonally

Each month we write a seasonal food column for SE21, 22 and 23 magazines. Look out for our recipes which also appear on our website.

Eating seasonal produce ensures that you always get the best tasting, healthiest food available, at the very best prices.

Read more about our own policy on seasonal food, and why it matters here and here on our website.

Our "Out & About" section offers a monthly low down on what's happening where for all you thrill seekers and culture vultures.

We hope you enjoy it, and please remember that if you are planning an event we would be delighted to see you at any of our venues in order to give you a guided tour while talking through the endless possibilities. We are often aware of special offers on venue hire and can assist in securing special rates when taking clients to a venue.
