January 2018

Happy New Year!

Turn that frown upside down! It's 2018 can you believe it? It's January and we must all have made fabulous New Years Resolutions.....but have you managed to keep them?

This is my 20th year in Business and my 30th year as a Chef - Not sure how that can be true though as I'm only 21! That's what I tell my youngest but pretty soon he will cotton on to my white lie!

One week in and here we all are, back at work and raring to go with bookings for parties, weddings and conferences flooding in. Looking at our diary we have already had to close a couple of prime summer dates so if you need to book us for an event please call in good time to avoid missing out.

The party season may be over for now, but January is our busiest time of year for wedding enquiries, with emails and calls flooding in not only for 2018 but now for 2019 and even 2020, so if you have emailed us about your wedding please do keep in touch and don't delay in finalising your date with us - things are changing really quickly.

I love the 'clean slate, new beginning' vibe that January brings, and with so many new enquiries to talk about there really is masses to look forward to.

So, definitely don't panic if you've got a big celebration coming up this year.......just.....
Keep Calm and let SJ take care of it!

The Bird Table (womens networking group) will be hosting their events at fifty seven from late January onwards - more information can be found on their website here.

To shun any ideas of 'Kick A Ginger Day' (thanks, South Park), Kiss A Ginger Day was born, to celebrate redheads and allow the rest of humankind to spend all day wanting to be just like them. As I am one of this very special breed please don't forget that this Friday 12th January is your annual opportunity to appreciate all things ginger! I shall be collecting kisses this Friday accordingly! #kissagingerday

One of our longest standing waiters Olivier has decided to run the London Marathon this year on 22nd April. He completed the Amsterdam Marathon in just over 5 hours last year and it seems he has well and truly got the marathon bug!

Olivier is running to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust. He has a minimum fundraising target of £1,800 and we want to give him all the support we can to help him not only achieve, but exceed that target.

There is no such thing as too small a donation, so please do consider sponsoring him if you possibly can via the link. Sponsor Olivier

Last, but not least if, like me, you are a gin fan then make sure you find time to pop along to The Foundling Museum to see Hogarth's famous Gin Lane Painting recreated in modern day form. It is well worth seeing.

Best wishes,

How to Hygge the Suzanne James way.....

The Danish word and concept 'hygge' has become quite a talking point recently, and with the dark nights and grey January days ahead of us I can understand why. The word may be hard to define, but it is easy to know when you've got it right. For me hygge is captured by a warm and cosy atmosphere and (obviously) plenty of good food.

Hygge is definitely a feeling I am delighted to have captured at fifty seven, our very own event space in the heart of East Dulwich. We had a whole host of lovely events there in the run up to Christmas and there is no doubt in my mind that it is becoming firmly established as East Dulwich's 'happy place". Make sure you pop in to say hello if you pass when we are open. Read more about fifty seven

Give a gift that lasts forever.....

Being able to cook is a life skill that everyone should master. I have never met anyone who regrets being able to cook, and once you know the basics there are no limits to what you can create.

Our cookery school will open its doors in 2018 for both adult and children's cookery lessons. The next step is to hold a couple of sample classes with a few volunteers and then we will be able to roll out our classes to one and all - we can't wait!

If you are interested in;
1. Being one of our students
2. Taking classes yourself under our guidance
3. Hiring the space for your own classes

Please get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.

Dulwich Pavilion finds new use at local primary school

Having recently donated to Goose Green Primary School's Green Screen Project to provide a pre grown ivy pollution barrier around the playground we are delighted to hear that the Dulwich Pavilion - a temporary events space built for Dulwich Picture Gallery's Bicentenary year is soon to become the focal point of the school's playground.

Created by young emerging architecture practice IF_DO, the Dulwich Pavilion was the result of a design competition organised by the Gallery in partnership with the London Festival of Architecture and Almacantar.

Designed to be demounted for reuse in order to provide a sustainable legacy, the pavilion has been moved to storage until summer 2018 when it will be rebuilt as a permanent outdoor space at Goose Green Primary School. The school will work closely with IF_DO who will continue to act as design guardians for the newly reinstalled pavilion. Children and parents will also be encouraged to have their say on how they would like the pavilion to be repurposed. While the timber roof is fixed, the flexible nature of the pavilion and its moveable panels means that the school can create a bespoke space.

The addition of the pavilion is perfect timing for the East Dulwich school, who have been liaising with children and parents to improve the current playground area which currently lacks a safe outdoor, waterproof play area and outdoor learning space. They approached the Dulwich Picture Gallery who selected the school as an ideal candidate to receive the pavilion for a clear local community use.
