Midsummer Madness!

SJune is upon us and we are as crazy, (or should that be hoppy) as a box of frogs!

This is the time of year when we spend more time at work than we do at home..... in fact home is where the event is, so it is just as well we love what we do and love to share our happiness with you!

May was absolutely a-may-zing this year. We were very busy from start to finish, and with some really wonderful and unusual events.

We got off to a fabulous start by catering the launch of The Dulwich Diverter - a new free newspaper for Dulwich; you may have noticed our double page spread on page 30 and 31?...if not you can catch it on line here!

Hot on its heels came the Dulwich Festival Fair at Goose Green, where we had a stall as one of this years sponsors. It was lovely to be able to say hello and get some festival selfies with so many clients - past, present and future, and we raised £160 for one of our favourite charities Link Age Southwark from the sale of our home made lemonade.

A few days later we found ourselves working alongside Kothu Kothu - a vegetarian, Sri Lankan street food stall, at a festival style birthday party (with our Hog Roast on hand for the meat eaters!), and as a chef it was fascinating to see a different and very traditional method of food preparation. The two food options worked brilliantly together and it was quite funny to see a few people going for the vegetarian option and then adding pork - good food combining!

The month ended with the Clerkenwell Design Week and a gathering of over 800 guests at the launch HQ - a busy evening was had by all, and a few of the waiting team are now saving hard for their dream designs!

I know lots of you are fellow foodies and you may have already heard about the furore over plans to close the BBC Food Website. If not then you can read more about it here.

I do think this is a valuable resource worth fighting for so for those who would like to sign the petition to save the recipe Archive here is the link;

Save the BBCs Recipe Archive!

June is always our busiest month but we are not the only ones to go 'above and beyond' this month - if you get the chance do pop along to the National Maritime Museum's latest exhibition - details are included later in the newsletter - and it sounds really amazing. Amongst all the June madness don't forget it is Royal Ascot from the 14th to the 18th June - so be quick to buy your hat if you haven't already and it is also Father's Day on the 19th June, which can rather creep up on us all at this busy time of year.

As most of you know, I am a natural (if enhanced) redhead. It has been said that every freckle represents a happy wedding - and I have plenty!! But his month the last laugh is on me and my fellow gingers as we can benefit from the generosity of one of our own. A south Wales restaurateur is offering a 20% discount to anyone with orange hair at Ginger's Grill in Prestatyn. It's enough to make the rest of you green with envy!!

Best wishes,

Suzanne James

Food News National Fish & Chip Day!

Friday, 3rd June was National Fish & Chip Day and we felt it was only right to celebrate by embracing this Great British tradition.

Winston Churchill referred to fish and chips as "good companions" and during the Second World War fish and chips weren't rationed because the morale of the nation couldn't take it!

They were first served as a dish together in around 1860 - in London the Malin family lays claim to being the first, while in Manchester the Lee family believes it had the honour. Whoever you believe, there's no doubting that fish and chips are big business.

There are about 10,500 specialist fish and chip shops in the UK.
Fish and chips were served in newspaper until the 1980s.
Fish and chips appear in Charles Dickens' A Tale Of Two Cities.
British Nutrition Foundation statistics show that an average fish and chip meal contains almost three times less fat (20.6%) than a plate of chicken tikka masala and pilau rice.

Volcano Coffee is moving to Brixton!

Volcano Coffee Works has been a member of the South London community since 2010 when Kurt, who was working as a chef, and Olaf, a war correspondent cameraman, decided to invest into running a small-batch specialty coffee roastery. South London was evidently crying out for this sort of a craft product and service .....
