June 2017

At the Cutting Edge.......

June is the month when Spring very definitely turns to Summer and for us it is always the busiest month of the year. The events come thick and fast and there are times when it really does feel as if our feet are not touching the floor. This is the cutting edge of the event industry, and as event professionals it is what we live and breath for, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

However, May was not a month when we rested on our laurels, in fact we catered for some amazing and exciting events, and took on some impressive challenges too, not least to organise a wedding in a week - more below!

Credit must be given to all of the amazing team who work so hard both front of house, and behind the scenes, all day, all week, all year to keep things running smoothly and to make our clients dreams come true - this isn't a job for the faint hearted, and nor can any one person do it alone - from our most senior staff to our trainees every person is vital - and this picture shows just how much as Ollie; one of our apprentice chefs, accepts some well deserved applause from me, and his well fed guests!

If you know me well then you will know that I am a huge advocate of eating seasonal, organic, sustainable produce, and the benefits of a healthy diet. We have always taken this seriously, but are able to develop this approach even more now that we have Natalia, our Head Chef who has a First Class Degree in Human Nutrition working alongside me. In June the UK's natural larder is literally bursting at the seams, yet shockingly, we are importing more food now than at any time since the 1970s. As 3 Star (top rated) members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association we are working to promote the use of seasonal food, not just at home, but when eating out too. Their most recent campaign "Feed Children Well" is about making sure that there are healthy menu options for children too when you eat out, something we fully endorse, and further support through our 'Grow, Prepare, Cook & Share' project in local schools.

Finally I want to apologise to all our very patient Supper Club fans for not being able to hold our much loved evenings for a while; as so often is the case the building work on our new premises has taken a little longer than planned, but we are almost there now and are making plans for August. We promise we have missed you as much as you have missed us!

Wishing you a marvellous June, and see you all on the other side!

Best wishes,

Suzanne James

A Wedding in a Week?
With Suzanne James anything is possible!

I love fate. About three months ago I bumped into a very old friend who I met at the age of 15 when we worked together in a shop in Dulwich Village as Saturday girls. We were young, we had fun, but eventually our careers started and we lost touch. It is always great to see an old friend, so we exchanged numbers and emails but didn't get a chance to catch up properly.

On Thursday 27th April I took a call from Chloe who told me she was getting married at a local venue soon and had just been to her tasting but was disappointed, all plans had changed and could I help?

When do you need me I asked?

Next Saturday, 6th May was her reply!

"Impossible!!" I hear you say......not with Suzanne James on the case, but don't just take my word for it, read on to hear about the day from the Brides own point of view....

SRA News - #KidsVegOut

Half portions for kids don't mean half veg measures We are fully supportive of the Sustainable Restaurant Associations "Feed Children Well" campaign. We have updated our children's menus to ensure that every dish now includes at least two portions of vegetables.

Of course it is the huge health benefit to children that is the driving force behind this campaign, but there is a massive environmental bonus too; if everyone in the UK ate an extra portion of vegetables as part of shifting towards a healthier diet this would reduce the UK's diet-related greenhouse gas emissions by 17%.

Garden Museum Re-Opens after Major Refurbishment

On 30 October 2015 the Garden Museum closed its doors to undergo a £7.5million redevelopment project. The work doubled the gallery space, recreated part of John Tradescant's Ark, set up the country's first Archive of Garden Design, built new pavilions in the gardens dedicated to learning and community work, built a bigger and brighter cafe and improved the gardens, heating, electrics and drainage.

Having worked at the Garden Museum for over 10 years this is the second redevelopment we have witnessed and we have watched the work progress with eager anticipation. It was with great delight that we catered the grand opening on Tuesday, 9th May when the great and good, major sponsors and famous names in gardening, including the lovely Alan Titchmarsh (one of my gardening heroes!) came along to admire the new space, and we hope, our wonderful canapés and service!

Situated by the River Thames and next to Lambeth Palace, the Garden Museum provides the perfect location for wedding receptions, corporate events, parties and celebrations of every kind.

The Museum's garden is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of central London and is an ideal setting for a pre-dinner drinks reception or even a barbecue.

The venue can accommodate up to 250-300 guests for a drinks reception, or 120 guests for a seated dinner and is available for hire Sunday to Friday from 5pm onwards and Saturday from 4pm onwards.

East Dulwich Supper Club
Returning in August

It has been a long wait but East Dulwich Supper Club will be back in August, bigger and better than ever before!

As a local girl born and bred I have always wanted to give something back to the community and to do this I am opening the East Dulwich Supper Club doors to the many young, talented foodies in the local area, and of course our very own apprentice chefs too.

Our new premises will provide an invaluable opportunity for these up and coming chefs to stand in the spotlight, test their skills and build invaluable confidence and experience.

Our own apprentices are terribly keen to showcase their work and the career development they have made over their time with us and are already working on ideas for their first Pop Ups. Being able to plan and prepare their event in our state of the art kitchen on Barry Road and then serve up their own Supper Club in our new premises will be a dream come true for these eager young professionals.

It is incredibly exciting to be able to provided this opportunity to young chef talent and we can't wait to bring more pop ups to you in the very near future.

Please be assured that all vouchers will be honoured and expiry dates extended as necessary.

You can read more about Supper Club and view the full menu on our website here.
