Goodbye & good riddance to the Beast from the East (& hello from the Mouth in the South!)

Well, I think we are all in agreement that last week was pretty horrible. I hope you all managed to get to where you needed to be safely, and without too much delay. I am proud to say that all of the SJ team made it in to work - some of us are lucky enough to live locally, whilst others braved buses and trains. Local schools may have been closed, but we weren't! Day and night our vans made it into Central London for events, the drinks kept flowing and the food fuelled our guests for their journeys home.

By comparison, temperatures this week feel almost balmy, and there was even a hint of Spring in the air as I walked along Lordship Lane this morning. The weather in this country can be so confusing! But, I am filled with optimism that before we know it there will be blossom on the trees and we will be getting excited about what to grow on the SJ allotment (I cannot lay full claim to this, but with my new commitment to a meat free diet, Amanda one of my amazing office team has kindly offered to share her plot with me.....don't tell her, but I am a bit worried about digging....eeek)! Anyway, in the coming months we will be sharing our growing exploits with you (good and bad) and with a bit of luck we might have some home grown pumpkins for our East Dulwich Supper Club next October!

In other news, I am excited to announce that we are now official members of the National Association of Wedding Professionals - which, alongside our affiliation with the Sustainable Restaurant Association proves yet again that we are recognised within the industry for our experience, ethics, standard of service and good practice. No matter how long we have been in business we believe there are always opportunities to develop or improve, and we will never stop working towards this goal. An example of this has been the creation of my own event space, fifty seven - my 'shop', my private events space for pop ups. for Supper Clubs, and my own personal dream - a cookery school. I didn't crowd fund and I didn't set up a just giving page. I worked hard, saved hard and eventually opened for business. It is till a work in progress, but it is now a reality, not a dream.

It is International Women's Day tomorrow - this year the focus is on how now, more than ever, there's a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity #PressforProgress is about motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. As a 'self made woman' in what was very much a male dominated world I relate strongly to this and will always do what I can to support those facing similar battles.

This is always on my mind when considering ways in which fifty seven can be used. It is available to hire for many purposes and not all classes are run by myself. Many pop ups and supper clubs are hired by guest hosts who specialise in their own cuisine and would like to share their passion with you - there are so many amazing, talented people out there who simply need a space in which to shine. Please keep a check on our newsletter and social media pages to find out about up and coming events and offer your support when you can. We also have a 'What's On' page on our website that lists all fifty seven events in date order with links for more info or to book so please do follow the link and make sure you save the page to your favourites - this is the easiest way of all to keep track of all the exciting things we have happening, and new listings are being added all the time now.

We still have a few seats left for our Bottomless Fizz, Afternoon Tea & Fascinator Workshop on Sunday, 25th March, and we have the perfect opportunity for ladies to come along and show off their creations on Saturday, 19th May when we are inviting you to come along to fifty seven to celebrate the royal wedding with us over a very regal afternoon tea. Please do send me an email if you would be interested in joining us.

Best wishes,

Suzanne James

Hat's off - here's a great Mothers Day present!

Afternoon Tea & Fascinator Workshop with bottomless fizz!

Sunday, 25th March 2018
2.00pm-5.00pm at fifty seven by Suzanne James

The trend for experiential presents just keeps on going, don't rely on flowers or chocolates this year - we have a much better options and we're not keeping it under our hats! Later this month we are hosting a prosecco fuelled vintage afternoon tea with a fascinator workshop to boot! Our good friend "The Crown Jules" has kindly agreed to share her skills before, during and after prosecco, teaching attendees how to make a beautiful head piece just in time for the Royal Wedding..... or any other event that may take their fancy!

The show starts, of course, with prosecco cocktails and canapés on arrival followed by the main event; a hands on millenary masterpiece tutorial. Guests will then be invited to make their own fascinator or comb headpiece. A little more prosecco and everyone will be flaunting their hats with merriment on the red carpet of North Cross Road while we set up for the most luxurious quintessentially English afternoon tea! Of course as well as cups of tea so we will be topping up the rosecco throughout!

This really is an event not to be missed, places are selling fast so be sure to snap up your tickets while you still can.

Cook Indian with Hari Ghotra

We are delighted to be welcoming Hari to fifty seven on Sunday, 15th April for an exclusive Indian cookery class. Hari will share tips and tricks to create authentic Indian food.

The class will begin with tea, coffee and introductions to Hari, the session and the dishes. Each class is a hands on experience where attendees do all the cooking in an informal setting under Hari's guidance so you have the opportunity to ask all your curry questions.

Attendees will cook 6 classic Indian dishes before sitting down to enjoy a relaxing lunch together made up of all the dishes you have cooked that morning including a well deserved glass of wine.

After lunch Hari will take you on a detailed tour of the Indian spice tin in her Spice Masterclass where you have an open forum to talk about spices and how to use them.

You will leave with a printed booklet of the recipes, the dishes you have cooked as well as a Hari Ghotra Curry Kit.

Thank you From Goose Green School

In February Goose Green School in East Dulwich finally completed their Green Screen Project! the school is now bordered by a 2.2 metre high, 80 metre long living ivy screen. This is already cleansing the NO2 and particulate matter from the playground air by as much as 40%.

We would like to thank everyone who attended our East Dulwich Supper Club over the past few months, as your support helped us to donate £1,000 towards this invaluable project.

You can read more about the project and see images of the screen being installed on the Greengrowers blog via the link below.
