May 2017

This is the start of our busiest time of year, and May is jam packed with great stuff to do locally here in South East London too with great food, music, art and local fairs to be enjoyed. If it all gets too much then you can always sneak off to Neverland in Fulham for a few cocktails on the beach........

May(be) I am a control freak?

There, I have finally admitted it! Possibly I have OCD too, or could it be that I simply want everything done my way? Whatever the case I managed to 'let go' enough in April to celebrate my birthday on a beach in Mauritius and that couldn't have happened without the phenomenal team I left behind at the SJHQ. They embraced my application for leave and made sure I was able to go by packing my bags and booking my airport taxi! Hmmm, is it possible they were actually hustling me out of the door?

In my absence all the events ran beautifully and the team didn't rest on their laurels, but also secured another 6 weddings, 14 corporate events and 3 private parties - there is no stopping them! In addition to that my secret "new premises" project didn't come to a halt and I returned to calm almost wonders why I dont spend more time on the beach?! The good news is that I won't need to get on a plane next time; now that Neverland in Fulham has arrived. I will be going along with one or two bottles of gin to see what clever cocktails their mixologists can create for me, read on to find out more!

So here we are; it's May and in Dulwich that only really means one thing; The Dulwich Festival! This year it will run from the 12th - 21st May and once again we are being given an amazing opportunity to see, feel, hear and taste all things arty. SJHQ have proudly sponsored the launch event for a number of years now. This always takes place a week or so before the official start date, and this year it was hosted by Bell House in Dulwich Village, a well known local landmark, now in use as a centre for educational needs. This grand Georgian house has quite a history to it, having been a Country Retreat for a London Mayor, a Boarding House for Dulwich College Boys and a family home, before stepping into its current role. If you have time do pop along to Bell House on the 13th and 14th May between 11am and 6pm when it will be hosting an Artists' Open House.

Easter has been and gone and I have to offer huge congratulations to those of you who managed to see out Lent before enjoying all of the things you gave up. Spring Lamb is back and tender as ever, as is one of my favourites - English Asparagus (and shhhhh Cadburys Cream Eggs)! Oh no, did I say that out loud?

I met a vegetarian recently who was telling me how incredibly bored she is of uninspiring vegetarian menu choices, mostly made up of risotto, nut roasts and cheese pasta dishes! I took up the challenge, keen to see what her thoughts would be on our own creations and sent our menus over the very next day. The feedback was that our dishes are different, creative and would all be willingly sampled - hurrah!!

Two of our most popular vegetarian dishes recently have been our Parmesan Polenta with Portobello Mushroom, Twice Baked Goats Cheese Soufflé & Wild Garlic Pesto with Pea Shoots (right) (so good a bride wanted to offer it as her only main course option for all!), and the Tomato Tartar with Fine Beans, Smoked Paprika & Creme Fraiche (above). Whatever your guests requirements you can rest assured that we will always adjust our menu to ensure that every single guest will be well fed, and leaving with a smile on their face!

As we are entering the Summer Season there is obviously only one thing to be thinking about; your Christmas party! I know it may seem strange (I hope not too annoying) to hear this, but you will always get a better deal if you book early - so call us now and let us help you plan the perfect event.

There is lots of exciting news this month, so read on, and have a wonderful May!

Best wishes,

Suzanne James

They did it!

We are delighted to report that our marathon wedding couple, Duncan and Jackie, crossed the line on Sunday 23rd April, raising more than £20,000 in the process.

Asked how they felt about the big day - combining both their ceremony at 7.30am and the marathon - bride Jackie said: 'it really was the best day of our lives. We said our vows among great friends, we managed to raise awareness and much-needed funds for The Willow Foundation and Breast Cancer Care, and London treated us to a street party unlike any we have ever experienced. The support was humbling. We ran to offer people hope (I have overcome both cancer and major hip problems to get to the start line) and just hearing that people have got out of wheelchairs and cancer patients have dusted off their trainers really is the best wedding gift we could imagine. A week later we got to party and eat brilliant Suzanne James food on board the Cutty Sark before our honeymoon charity trek on the Great Wall of China.

All we want to do now is thank everyone who made it so so special. We will never forget the 37th London Marathon. What a brilliant way to celebrate our wedding anniversary every year.'

Congratulations Duncan and Jackie. We hope you have a long and happy life together.

Our Own Southwark Star

We are so proud of our very own Event Planner Maria who was awarded a Southwark Star Certificate this week for her voluntary work with Theatre Peckham.

Maria attended the awards ceremony at the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern on Tuesday 2nd May.

The awards celebrate those who take the time to volunteer to support others and therefore help to make Southwark a better place. Certificates were awarded to volunteers who have contributed 100 or more hours to an organisation in the past year.

Working four days a week, running a home, juggling two children, and volunteering as well definitely puts Maria in the Super Star category in our eyes - well done Maria!

We would also like to congratulate Linkage Southwark who won Charity of the Year, it is lovely to see such an important charity received the recognition it deserves.

We will once again be sponsoring the Goose Green Fair and will be there on the day selling cakes made by Ollie, our apprentice pastry chef, and quite possibly our amazing home made lemonade too. All money raised will go to Linkage Southwark.

There will be three wonderful fairs to enjoy this year;

Back for the 12th year running, the Festival Fair on Goose Green is THE event in East Dulwich. The Fair is a wonderful day out for all the family; from bouncy castles to the EDT beer tent, handmade children's t-shirts to homemade cakes, designer jewellery to local photography, the Festival Fair will bring together the essence of SE22. Nibble delicious food from the many food stalls as you listen to music on 'The Goose is Out!' Stage and enjoy a drink from the EDT beer tent as your children have their faces painted for free! Not forgetting the wonderful donkey rides!

Love West Dulwich Fair
Saturday 20th May 10am-5pm

Celebrating the uniqueness of SE21, the West Dulwich Fair will highlight the quintessential character of the area, its people and exciting mix of independent businesses, mixing art, culture, fashion and fun for all the family. Activities will include market stalls, arts and crafts, maypole dancing, face painting, street food, fair rides, farm animals, live music, and in store activities.

Dulwich Park Fair

Dulwich Park Fair, now in its 10th year, gets bigger and better each year! It is a traditional country style fair and will have all the popular attractions such as the Steam Fair rides, Vauxhall City Farm, Punch and Judy, the Magician and Maypole dancing. The stage by the café will feature local musicians, brass bands, choirs and dance acts of all ages. The arena will have demonstrations of martial arts, football skills and a surprise show! No parking - please come by public transport.

St Christopher's Hospice
East Dulwich Supper Club

Last month we hosted a special East Dulwich Supper Club evening in support of St Christopher's Hospice. The evening was fully booked and Suzanne took the opportunity to tell those attending of her own family's gratitude to St Christopher's.

The evening included a raffle which raised £400, with prizes ranging from a large tray of Ferrero Rocher to ten Pilates classes, and a rather fabulous Gin Hamper donated by Suzanne James herself (Gin being one of her specialist subjects without a doubt!).

Overall the evening was a great success raising just over £2,000.00 which will go directly to this wonderful, local charity.

London's very own beach with street food and BYOB!

This summer's best-value alfresco eating and drinking experience has to be Neverland in Fulham.

Launching on the banks of the Thames on 10th May and running until the 3rd October. We are told there will be white sand and palm trees - as well as a whole lot of street food and the option to bring your own booze (no soft drinks).

General admission is a fiver and groups can book beach huts seating 6-8 guests, for £50 a pop. Lounging day beds are £90 each and can take 12-20 guests.

Large group bookings are best made by email. General admission tickets, beach huts and day beds can be booked online. See you there - bikinis optional!
