Work Hard, Party Harder!

It's the time of year when most of us find our already busy schedules take on a life of their own with work and social events coming together into a flurry of pre-Christmas demands! Provided there is time to catch your breath now and again in between all the festivities it is a pretty magical time of year, and one of the lovely things about my job is that I get to know about all the fabulous events that you are planning!

Talk of Christmas inevitably leads to thoughts of the New Year, and with this in mind, we have now finalised our 2018 Beverage List which includes Beer, Wine, Soft Drinks and now Cocktails by the glass too! Please email us if you'd like to see a copy - we hope you like it as much as we do!

If you live locally I hope you have spotted our advert (right) in local magazines including SE22 which you can also view on line here. Our private event space in East Dulwich, fifty seven is proving to be incredibly popular for private hire, but remember that for those who wish to enjoy our food and service without hiring the venue exclusively there is always the opportunity to book a shared party night, or even to join us at one of our East Dulwich Supper Club evenings - our Christmas Supper Club is always one of our most popular evenings. This year we are offering a a sumptuous six course meal, with cocktails and canapés to start, and wines throughout. Black tie is optional for those who like to 'dress to impress'. Further details including the date and menu can be found below.

As many of you know all profits from our Supper Club evenings go directly to the Suzanne James Food Foundation. The money we raise is used to help fund projects in local schools, so thank you to each and every one of you, for helping to make this possible. We are delighted to have been able to assist three wonderful causes recently;

1) We have pledged £1,000 to Goose Green Primary School towards their 'Green Screen Project' - a pre-grown ivy pollution barrier between the school's playground and the busy adjacent main road. Such ivy "Green Screens" have been proven to reduce dangerous emissions by an incredible 40-60%. The 87m long green screen will improve air quality, increase biodiversity and become a beautiful feature, benefiting the whole community and protecting the children while they play and learn."

2) We have pledged £250 to Kender Primary School in New Cross to help them create a Butterfly Garden in the corner of their copse, where they also keep chickens and collect eggs each day.

3) We have pledged £300 to St Mary Magdalene Church of England School in Peckham to help them extend their allotment which is used as a combined space for Science Projects, Green Team Learning and 'Muck & Miracles', their growing project.

This Saturday, 4th November we are running a very special charity Supper Club evening to raise money for Rhino Revolution, an amazing charity who's mission is to protect rhinos, today and for future generations in the Greater Kruger Area, the epicentre of the poaching crisis. 100% of the ticket price is going directly to the charity and due to demand we have just released 2 more tickets as we really do want to raise as much as we can for this amazing cause! If you would like to join us click here to book your seats, but be quick! We will report back next month to let you know just how much we managed to raise in total.

The only way to succeed in this business is through the quality of our food and service. We take great pride in our events so it is wonderful to see that two of our weddings have been chosen in the Wedding of the Year Awards with Your London Wedding Magazine - congratulations to wedding planners Amanda and Claire for the important part they played in this, and to both couples too, we loved helping create your dream wedding day!

There are so many exciting events taking place all the time, read on to hear about how we worked with Spotify last week to host an album launch, and about next week's very special event at the Museum of the Order of St John, not to mention some amazing winter hire offers at our venues. Have a great November.

Wedding of the Year Awards - Your London Wedding

We are feeling incredibly excited this month, with the news that one of the weddings we organised this year is already through to the finals of the Wedding of the Year Awards, and now a second one has been shortlisted for the latest round of voting.

Amy & Jason were crowned winners in the last round of voting, securing their place in the finals. They got married at the Horniman Conservatory in mid July. Amanda was their planner and enjoyed helping them create a wonderful day that incorporated English, Japanese & Kiwi elements.

Jackie & Duncan got married at the Cutty Sark in April. They took the phrase 'marriage is a marathon and not a sprint' quite literally for their special day, tying the knot at 7.30am before donning their running gear and completing the well-known London race with members of the wedding party in tow. A week later, the couple returned to the Cutty Sark to celebrate their union in style, working with our Event Planner Claire to create their dream day. They have made it through to the shortlist for the latest round of voting, and we very much hope that they too will secure their place in the final.

Read more and place your vote here.

The winning couple will win a two-night stay in a suite at St. Ermin's Hotel, London plus a seasonal afternoon tea for two, worth more than £1,000.

We wish both couples the very best of luck, and look forward to having to say #voteamanda or #voteclaire in the Spring! Gosh, it's like X Factor for wedding planners!!

Jessie Ware - Album Launch

On Monday 23rd October there really was only one place that the award winning artist Jessie Ware could be to launch her new album, Glasshouse; at the Horniman Conservatory of course!

Spotify invited some of Jessie's biggest London fans along to enjoy a very special evening of cocktails, charcuterie & cheese, whilst Jessie performed songs from the album and took part in a Q&A session.

There were musicians, sound technicians, lighting specialists, florists, set designers, stylists, make up artists and of course the Suzanne James team on hand to make sure everything was in the right place at the right time for Jessie to perform her chosen songs.

As you can see the Conservatory looked stunning filled with ferns and lit up in tones of green and blue for the night.

Ruff It with Lady James!

On Thursday, 9th November we are delighted to be serving Tudor delicacies and cocktails at the Museum of the Order of St John for their Elizabethan Court Masque venue showcase.

The Priory of the Order of St John functioned from 1578 as Queen Elizabeth I's Revels Office; Thirty of Shakespeare's plays were performed there for the first time.

The event will run from 3pm to 7pm, guests will be given Elizabethan ruffs to wear to get them into the spirit of the event, and will enjoy a tour of the venue which will include performances such as Romeo & Juliet's balcony scene by Globe Summer School Graduates, Sir John Falstaff's 'sherry speech' and the Handlebards boys troop performing scenes from A Midsummer Nights Dream.

A few limited places still remain for this amazing event so if you would like to attend please email us - please note that your attendance is only confirmed upon receipt of an email reply from us.

The Museum of the Order of St John is a fantastic venue for winter events, contact us now to find out more, or read about it on our website here.

Sunday 19th November - International Mens Day, focussing on men's and boy's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models

19th-25th November - National Eating Out Week - it might be worth checking to see if any of your favourite restaurants are celebrating this with special offers.

Thursday 23rd November - Thanksgiving, a national holiday celebrated in Canada, the United States, some of the Caribbean islands, and Liberia.

Friday 24th November - Black Friday - the annual shopping extravaganza when there will be some great deals to be had.

25th November - 3rd December - National Tree Week, the UK's largest tree celebration annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season & very dear to our hearts due to our partnering with Tree Appeal with whom we have planted almost 2,000 in the past 11 years.

Sunday 26th November - Stir it up Sunday - Time to make your Christmas Pudding! Good Housekeeping have put together a great guide here.

I am always happy to share my own recipes, but try to limit them to the SE Magazines for whom I write exclusively each month, so here are two recipes from one of my favourite female chefs;

While you are making up your Christmas Pudding I would also recommend making your Christmas Cake. For a traditional fruit cake it is ideal to give it 12 weeks to mature, so if you haven't done it already now is definitely the time to do it! Some things just can't be improved on, so I will bow gracefully and defer to the Delia when it comes to this recipe, which is from her original cook book and is still my favourite!

Whenever you like! Get ahead of the game in the run up to Christmas and make your mince pie mincemeat up now. It can actually be stored for up to 3 years in a cool, dark place so you can definitely do it now to save yourself some time in December.
I really like Delia's recipe here.

Saturday 2nd December - East Dulwich Christmas Cracker, this every popular annual event allows you to indulge in some Christmas Shopping whilst enjoying music, dancing, carol singing and sparkling entertainment for all the family.

Christmas is coming ..... only 11 weeks to go!

It has been a fabulous Summer of weddings, but it doesn't end there! Now, with underfloor heating the Conservatory is a year round venue, perfect for Winter Weddings or Corporate Christmas Parties. Earlier sunsets and darker nights mean the venue can be lit magically with twinkling fairy lights, or colour change LED's - the only limit is your imagination!

A few dates are still available so contact us now to find out more.

If you don't have an excuse for a party, but still want to visit the Horniman Museum & Gardens why not pop along to one of their special Christmas events;
